So finally Thanksgiving is out of the way and I can officially start decorating for Christmas. I usually don't decorate until the day after Thanksgiving but I admit I did start a few days early this year. I got tired of waiting around for Thanksgiving and it seemed like it was taking it's sweet little time in getting here. It started out with a wreath here, more pine cones over there.... a berry branch here (LOVE those sprigs of red berries!!) Before I knew it, it was mostly done. I had decided that I wasn't going to put out as much this year as I usually do, so it didn't take very long. I went with mostly the "rustic and primitive" theme this year. Which is...less is best! I didn't even put my Christmas village out this time. I usually put my village in an old green cabinet I have but I was tired and after trying to decide where to put all those dishes that are in that green cabinet, I finally just pushed that village tote right on back to my bedroom. Out of sight and out of the mind. Decision was made...no village this year. But it just don't seem right without it though. OH! And this is the first year ever that I've beaten Ma at getting started on decorating for Christmas. There's a reason for that though and we ain't too happy about it either! She got picked for jury duty and it's majorly put a dent in Ma's decorating~time...bless her heart. I told Ma to tell the judge we didn't have time for "no jury~dutying," that we had decorating to do! But she didn't of course. And she got picked. Poor Ma. (Glad it's her though and not me!) Anyways, I thought I was all done with my decorating, until last night, I was sitting on the couch and looking around, I decided I didn't like it, so I started all over again. I moved this over here.. and that over there...put this away cuz I decided I didn't want to use it after all and was just pretty much disgusted with myself cuz I can't leave nothing alone. I have to re~do and re~do until I'm pulling my hair out until I'm finally satisfied...I think...with how it looks. (I get that from MA, ya know ) I also made a garland for the half~wall that divides the living room and kitchen and also one to go over the kitchen cabinets. I think it looks better but then again, everything looks better with greenery, Christmas balls and red berries on it! So, these past 2 days, I've stuck a bow, some red berries and Christmas balls on just about anything and everything that didn't move. (I did however resist temptation to stick a few on hubby as he was sleeping on the couch.) Then while on a break from decorating, I got distracted when I seen these little rustic, material~wrapped candy canes. Ain't they the cutest things?! I seen the idea on Pinterest so I had to try to make a few. What I used: Candy canes ( real or plastic will work) Material ( any fabric you like) hot glue gun (ouch!!) scissors Raffia ribbon/string for the bows old buttons and never mind the tape you see in this photo, I decided not to use it ...lol First, I made a cut about an inch at the top of the material and then just ripped the fabric all the way down the length of the fabric. Doing this gives me the "rough" look I want for the edge of the strips of material. Then I cut the long strip into 20~inch strips. Then, I added a bit of glue to the end (doesn't matter which end you choose to start at). Add a bit of glue on the side of the candy cane to hold the material down and then tuck the ends in. The only glue I added was at the ends. Your "ends" will look something like this...hopefully even a bit neater than this. :) Last, as you get to the end just cut the material at an angle and then tuck the ends inside and glue. I added bows of Raffia, which thankfully with this being a "rustic" ornament, the bows don't have to be "perfect". I took about 6 strands and tied the bow around the candy canes and then just a drop of glue to hold it firmer in place in the middle. I also glued a button to the raffia bow to "jazz" it up. The buttons I used were my grandmother's. I cherish this little tin can full of buttons because they were HERS. Some of these buttons are older than I am...which is... OLD! Another final pic Thanks for stopping by and I hope YOUR holiday decorating is going well. I love seeing all my friend's and family's holiday pics of their trees and houses all decorated. You all SO inspire me!
