From one beginner to another, I know from experience how difficult it is to try and understand everything we need to learn about photography. I've read my Canon manual (actually more than once), I've also read article after article about anything and everything I could get my hands on to better understand all this photography stuff. And let me tell ya, it ain't easy. I joined a few photography groups on Facebook and one of the questions I see asked frequently is "What is F-Stop and Aperture?" I haven't learned much, but here's a little of what I've learned so far. Aperture and F~Stop is basically referencing the same thing. Aperture is, in a sense, the mechanism itself and F-Stop is the MEASURE of that mechanism. (Kind of like a measuring cup, you've used to measure out ingredients for a recipe that calls for 1/4, 1/2 or 1 cup measurements.) Aperture and F-Stops work the same way. F-Stop is a term used to explain the amount of light that enters into your camera. The best way I can describe this is to imagine yourself in a dark room and you open a door. As the door slowly opens, it lets light into the room. The wider the door opens, the more light is let into the room. The same thing happens in a camera. The smaller the F-Stop number, the larger the lens opening. The larger the F-stop number, the smaller the lens opening. (I know, that part still doesn't sound right, but it will soon!) If you set your F-Stop to a low number such as 1.4 or 2.8 , the background in your photo will be totally blurry and the subject of your photo is really going to "stand out." At this range, you get that pretty "bokeh" effect. Bokeh is that wonderful, beautiful "fuzziness" in photos that have a shallow depth of field (DOF), in other words, a low F-Stop. Remember all those Christmas photos you may have seen with those beautiful orbs of light all around? Those all had a low F-Stop number. I love bokeh! When you start to increase your F~Stop, say to 5.6, you will begin to start seeing a little bit more of the background.
An F~stop that is set at 11 or 16, you're getting a good idea of what the background looks like. As you experiment with your camera and you increase your F-Stop number, the more you will see of the background. Just remember, the lower the number, the blurrier you're background will be. The higher the number, the clearer the background will be. I sincerely hope I've made this understandable and not confused you anymore than you may already be if you're a beginner (like me). I left out all the technical words (which I hate), because when I'm trying to learn something new, I want it spelled out simple and easy! I still haven't figured out ALL there is to know related to Aperture and F~Stops, but for a beginner, this is probably the most basic to begin with and trying to understand it all. So, grab your camera, find one specific thing to take a photo of and start at the lowest F-Stop and then keep increasing your F-Stop. As you go along, you'll see for yourself the difference in the background of your photos, as you increase and experiment with it. The main thing is..just have fun with it, that's what it's really all about anyway. :) What's another area that is confusing for YOU in photography if you're a beginner?? Let me know and maybe we can learn together! :) Keep Smilin' & Keep snappin' ! Thanks for stopping by! Be good and be pretty and as always... ✻ღϠ₡ღ✻ God Bless ✻ღϠ₡ღ✻ Hi...remember me?
I've been having some major "blog funk" lately and can't seem to snap out of it. It didn't help any that I wasn't really satisfied with the way the blog looked either. But today, I came across another blogger who also uses Weebly as her host. Which reminds me, y'all need to go over there and check out Faythe's quilt she made...it's gorgeous! http://cottagegarden.weebly.com/blog/another-string-quilt-finished Anyways, I totally fell in LOVE with the look of her blog and the blog itself. I loved the theme she had chosen and I finally worked up enough nerve to send her a message to ask her where she got it. I honestly half expected a "get your own theme!" kind of response back but, happily , she was soooooooo very kind and helpful and immediately directed me in the right path so I could start "renovating" my blog. So a HUGE thank you Faythe, you totally made my day! ღ I love renovating! :) There's some things I still want to do or add but for starters, I'm loving it and it's all thanks to Faythe over at Cottage Gardens. She's my first "Blogging Buddy"!!) Now with the blog's new look, maybe I can start writing again. Lord knows I've missed it... and YOU. So, how do you like the new look? Is it a YAY or a NAY? ("I don't care" wasn't an option though, sorry!) :) Thanks for stopping by, I've missed you! Be good and be pretty and as always... ✻ღϠ₡ღ✻ God Bless ✻ღϠ₡ღ✻ |
